Antibiotics are substances secreted by bacteria, molds, plants and animals and have the ability to inhibit the growth of microbes and cause their death (anti – against, bios – life). The importance of antibiotics in modern medicine is difficult to overestimate. They are used with great success for the treatment and prevention of human infectious diseases. There is practically no branch of medicine wherever antibiotics are used. Antibiotics have saved and will save millions of human lives, alleviate the suffering of people and shorten the duration of the disease.

What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are substances that inhibit the growth of living cells, most often prokaryotic and protozoa. Antibiotics can be natural (natural) origin and artificial (synthetic and semi-synthetic).

Naturally occurring antibiotics are most often produced by actinomycetes and molds, but they can also be obtained from bacteria (polymyxins), plants (phytoncides), and animal and fish tissues.

Antibiotics that inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria are used as medications. Antibiotics have also been widely used in cancer practice, as antitumor drugs. In the treatment of diseases of viral origin, the use of antibiotics is not advisable, since they are not able to act on viruses. However, it was noted that a number of antibiotics (tetracyclines) are able to act on large viruses.

Antibacterial drugs are synthetic drugs that do not have natural analogues and have an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth similar to antibiotics.

Classification of antibiotics by the nature of the effect on the bacterial cell:

  • bacteriostatic drugs (stop the growth and reproduction of bacteria)
  • bactericidal drugs (kill bacteria)

Antibiotics are distinguished by the method of preparation:

  • natural
  • synthetic
  • semi-synthetic

According to the direction of action, they distinguish:

  • antibacterial
  • antitumor
  • antifungal

The spectrum of action distinguishes:

  • broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • narrow spectrum antibiotics

What is the main difference between antibiotic therapy and other types of treatment? The difference is that antibiotic therapy is a treatment aimed at eliminating the cause of the disease – the destruction of the pathogen that caused the specific disease.

The value of antibiotics as drugs is not in doubt.

Antibiotic discovery

Nobody invented antibiotics, they have always been. Scientists only managed to detect, process and apply them. Everyone knows the story of the discovery of the first antibiotic by British scientist Alexander Fleming in 1928. Penicillin was discovered due to Fleming’s occasion and natural observation. On agar plates, he grew various colonies of bacteria. When mold spores got into one of the cups, the scientist did not throw it away, but began to observe. He noticed that the bacteria that came into contact with the mold died. Fleming isolated active compounds from this mold, which they called penicillin. Derivatives of the first antibiotic are still in clinical practice.

Most of the currently used antibiotics were discovered in the middle of the last century. Over two decades, a wave of discoveries swept across the world. The search for antibacterial substances was approximately the same in all countries. Microorganisms or fungi were isolated from the natural environment, for example, from the soil. They studied their ability to neutralize or kill bacteria. Then a large colony of producers was grown and their antibiotic was collected.

At the very beginning, it seemed to scientists that humanity was able to defeat bacteria once and for all. It is only necessary to find the best antibiotic. But it turned out that we won only a delay of several decades.

There are many difficulties in working with new antibiotic producers. And no one can guarantee the result. Increasingly, researchers began to identify already discovered antibiotics. And new antibacterial substances began to appear every 5-10 years.
